Lake Urmia has become a social, political, and economic crisis for Iran, said the chairman of the West Azerbaijan delegation in parliament, MP Hakim Memekan, APA reports, citing Iranian media.
"Indifference to the Lake Urmia crisis can lead to irreparable consequences for the surrounding provinces, and even the entire country. The drying up of Lake Urmia is not just an ecological issue. This issue has become a social, political and economic threat. In the future, we will witness an increase in diseases in the provinces surrounding the lake. Also, serious damage will be done to the climate and agriculture," the MP emphasized.
Note that more than 90% of Lake Urmia, once considered the largest lake in the Middle East, has dried up.
