Over years International Committee of the Red Cross adapts sphere of activity in Azerbaijan

Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloglu - APA. “The humanitarian needs of the people affected by Nagorno Karabakh conflict have recently changed. Consequently, the sphere of activity of the International Committee of the Red Cross has changed,” Head of Azerbaijan Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Denise Duran said at the press conference, APA reports.

Denise Duran said in the initial stage ICRC provided emergency aid.

“We offered the sides cooperation regarding prisoners of war, civilian internees. There were programs on agriculture, medicine, mine security. There are people living under the impact of unresolved conflicts, their conditions have become stable. The government is offering better conditions to the refugees and internally displaced persons. Therefore, the sphere of activity of the International Committee of the Red Cross has changed. Currently, we are carrying out activities regarding civilians in the conflict zone and on the frontline and families of missing persons,” she said.

She said the people living in the frontline regions feel the impact of the conflict every day.

“They can be killed and wounded. We carried out mine awareness activities in that territory. Currently, ANAMA is doing this job. Together with Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society we are working with the persons hit by mines. At the meetings with servicemen we underline the necessity of observing the international law. We call to integrate the international law in the military doctrines. As a part of our work, we are supporting people to carry out self-protection activities. We explain to the people living in the frontline zone that they should change forms of behavior. Especially, male civilians wearing military uniforms become targets. Media should help us in this. Because despite our warnings, they are still wearing military uniforms,” she said.
