Upon the instructions of Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the members of the National Preventive Group (MPG) continue to visit detention places which people can not leave on their free will, APA reports.
It was reported that within the framework of the Ombudsperson's National Preventive Mechanism activities, the next visit was organized to the Baku Investigation Detention Center of the Penitentiary Service under the Ministry of Justice, in accordance with the requirements of the UN "Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment" and the "Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan."
The purpose of the visit was to investigate the conditions of detention and treatment in the facility, as well as the situation regarding the protection of the rights of the individuals held there.
During the visit, which also involved the specialized doctor and psychologist members of the NPM, several detainees in the facility, including Sevinj Abbasova, Elnara Gasimova, and Nargiz Absalamova, were received confidentially, their complaints were heard on-site, and some were addressed immediately. The individuals who were received were informed about their rights and the powers of the Ombudsperson.
At the end of the visit, conversations were held with the management of the detention center, relevant recommendations based on national and international legislation were given.
