Polling stations in Brazil closed at 5:00 PM local time, officially concluding voting in the second round of the presidential election. The country's Supreme Electoral Court has begun counting the votes, APA reports.
Thanks to a fully electronic voting system that eliminates paper ballots, the first preliminary results will be published immediately. The final result and the name of the new head of state are traditionally known within a few hours after the polls close.
In the decisive second round, the incumbent president, leader of the left-wing Workers' Party, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the right-wing opposition candidate, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, competed for the highest state post.
