Do they concretely mean abolition of the organization, or centralized exams? Do they wish to solve the education-related problems, or have other purposes? These questions remain open,” chairperson of the State Student Admission Commission (SSAC) Maleyka Abbaszadeh said in her interview to APA on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the commission. Commenting on the reports that multiple choice tests will be abolished, Maleyka Abbaszadeh called people not to politicize it.
“If multiple choice tests are so bad, why do they apply it in terminal exams? Why does the Education Ministry prefer multiple choice tests in centralized exams at schools and in recruitment of teachers? We are working on the questions “how can we use the world’s innovations in this sphere to contribute to Azerbaijan’s education?” , we are seeking answers to these questions,” she said.
Maleyka Abbaszadeh said step-by-step improvements will be made in the entrance exams.
“But the final exams will be improved first of all. It is planned to pay more attention to essays. Since it takes much time to check the multiple choice tests and essays simultaneously, it is offered to schedule essays on native language for the beginning of the third quarter. When pupils come for final exams the results of the essays will be ready, and the result of the final exams will be determined and declared together,” she said.
Chairperson of the SSAC said the number of the subjects in the entrance exams to the specialized secondary schools can be reduced. She mentioned that new authorities were given to SSAC under the decree issued by President in April, 2012.
“SSAC has been commissioned to exercise final assessment and monitoring of textbooks at secondary schools. Earlier, SSAC had monitored the textbooks with the view of preventing mistakes in the content of the exam. From now on, monitoring will be conducted in a new format. This department has already been formed and started functioning. SSAC has received thousands of applications regarding textbooks. Broad scientific councils will be set up on every subject after public discussions. The views expressed at the public discussions will be analyzed at the scientific councils. The conclusions of the councils regarding the textbooks will be made public and submitted to the Education Ministry. Of course, the authors of the textbooks will also be invited to the councils. Textbooks must be perfect. I hope we will be able to gain achievements regarding textbooks, as the country’s leadership and public support us,” she said.
Maleyka Abbaszadeh said it is planned to hold entrance exams at the new regional departments of SSAC next year.
