The expansion of BRICS in the future will occur through a filtering criterion for partner states, Yury Ushakov, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation in charge of foreign policy, APA’s Russian bureau reports.
"The union has reached an agreement on important criteria for partner states, and the future expansion of BRICS will pass through this filter," Ushakov emphasized.
He noted that a list of 13 countries has been agreed upon. "For now, we have decided not to publish the names of these countries, as we need to discuss whether they are ready for full membership in BRICS or to join in some relevant form," the Kremlin official added.
Note that the 16th summit of BRICS heads of state, chaired by Russia, is taking place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining the union in 2011. As of January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia became full members of BRICS.
The Kazan summit will be the first summit to welcome new members. Representatives from over 30 countries are expected to participate in the summit.
