The urgent measures to ensure the reliable protection of the Republic of Azerbaijan's maritime borders and to strengthen the control of regime rules in the Caspian Sea are ongoing, the State Border Service told APA.
It was reported that at 04:30 on August 1, an unknown target was detected by the Coast Guard of the State Border Service in the southern part of the Caspian Sea, 1.8 miles from the coast, moving in the north direction from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
To detain the detected target, a pursuit operation was initiated by a border patrol vessel guarding the state border. Coastal control units were notified accordingly, and urgent measures were taken to close off the coastline.
As a result of the coordinated efforts between the Coast Guard's coastal control units and the border patrol vessel, a citizen of the Republic of Iraq, Mahdi Salih Fayzi, born in 1992, who attempted to cross the state border into the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan using a small watercraft, was detained.
Operational-investigative measures are ongoing regarding the incident.
