World Bank develops new project for high education in Azerbaijan

Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva–APA. World Bank and the Ministry of Education held joint seminar in Baku on Monday dedicated to the start of the Second Project for development of Education Sector, APA reports. Minister of Education Misir Mardanov said Azerbaijan’s Government had carried out jointly with the World Bank 10-year program for development of education sector since 2003.
22 million dollars were spent to the implementation of first phase of the project in 2003-2008. The main goal of the second project in 2008-2013 is the improvement of education in the secondary schools, improvement of education results and increase of expenditures. 45.4 million dollars are considered to spend for the implementation of the second project. 25 million dollars will be allocated by the International Development Association as soft credit and 20.4 million will be given by Azerbaijani Government.
Deputy Prime Minister Elchin Efendiyev said Azerbaijani Government gave great importance to the cooperation with WB. He said education budget increased for five times over the past five years. 14 state programs are carried out in this sphere currently. World Bank Manager for Azerbaijan Gregory Yedrzejczak said results of education reforms already appeared. The manager said teachers were taking active part in the education process. “These are historical changes and these revolutionary changes started 15 years ago. WB experience can help Azerbaijan to carry out these changes”.
Yedrzejczak said he was satisfied with the cooperation with Azerbaijani Government and noted that they prepared new project for development of high education in the country.

The seminar will be finalized on Tuesday.
