UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office to support Anti-Corruption Centres in Azerbaijan
# 10 July 2007 13:41 (UTC +04:00)
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom has recently agreed to support Transparency Azerbaijan’s Anti-Corruption Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres’ (ALACs) in Baku, Ganja and Lenkeran, the US Embassy told the APA.
The support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will enable the three centres in Baku, Lenkeran and Ganja, to build on their already impressive track record of 5,140 initial calls/visits by citizens in 18 months. The centres help to identify areas of concern to citizens and monitor corruption countrywide. They will continue to provide a much needed service to citizens, and will continue to play a vital role in changing society’s attitude to corruption and encouraging structural reform.
This project will last for 12 months and will include the following activities:
Toll-Free Hotline, Legal Advice, Advocacy, Capacity building of government and institutions, Public outreach.
Transparency International’s (TI) Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres have been established in 12 countries throughout Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus. The centres have been operating in Azerbaijan since July 2005. Since the first centre opened in Baku, TI Azerbaijan has opened a further four ALACs in regions outside the capital in Ganja, Lenkoran, Guba and Sheki, making it the only TI national chapter to operate more than two centres. /APA/
