Adil Garibov: â€œAmphibole asbestos in roof slate remain in human organism for 500 days causing lung cancer and other diseasesâ€

Amphibole asbestos could remain in human organism for 500 days causing lung cancer and other diseasesâ€, director of the Radiation Problems Institute Adil Garibov told reporters, APA said.

The International Labor Organization pursues ban on such roof slates in Europe by its decision No 162.

Garibov said asbestos and tile roof slates are not radioactive. â€œEven bricks in Azerbaijan receive certificates on radioactivity before use. If traditional tile roofs are produced by synthesizing they could be used in roof slatesâ€.

The Radiation Problems Institute participated in the government discussions on roof slates and the institute director said he also had an opinion that the bricks, roof slates and tile roofs are not radioactive.

According to Garibov, the roof slate is more political issue than scientific one. â€œThis is a decision made by the European Union. Asbestos is being produced by five countries, including Russia, Ukraine and Canada. They would like to develop its production, but it doesnâ€™t depend on their desires. Director of an asbestos plant in Italy was sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment because increase of people suffering from cancer. If asbestos has negative impact, it should be prevented. If Azerbaijan makes such efforts, it means the country has economic potential and cares about the health of its citizensâ€.
