Recitation of adhan disallowed in Georgia

Georgia. Nizami Mammadzade – APA. Recitation of adhan (call to prayer) is disallowed in the Jummah mosque in Tbilisi during the holy month of Ramadan, Ramin Haji Igidov, head of the Georgian Muslims Office (GMO), told reporters on Saturday, APA’s correspondent reported.

He said that the draft law “On religion” prohibits the loud recitation of adhan in Georgia.

“Adhan can be called out only inside the mosque. It’s said that the loud recitation of adhan causes inconvenience for others. But I don’t agree with that. I propose to appeal to relevant state agencies. In this regard, we need the support of all, including the public,” the GMO head said.

He warned of an increase in the threat of Wahhabi/Salafi in Georgia.

“Today, wahhabis and salafis make up a large part of those joined the “Islamic State” terrorist organization. We must not allow them to gain strength in Georgia,” he added.
