The Board of Peace initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump has attracted attention as a new political approach to resolving the long-standing Israel–Palestine conflict in the Middle East. This idea goes beyond classical mediation mechanisms and aims to create a broader and more inclusive platform based on dialogue, mutual interests, and the principles of collective responsibility. The initiative’s goal is not limited to reducing regional tensions but also envisions the creation of new political mechanisms within the global security system.

States’ attitudes toward such international platforms clearly reflect their position in the global system, the tangible contributions they make to peace processes, and their understanding of international responsibility. In this context, Azerbaijan’s invitation to the Board of Peace is not coincidental. This invitation is the logical continuation of the political course taken by the President of Azerbaijan, who participated in the Middle East Peace Summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh, as well as the outcome of Azerbaijan’s consistent, principled, and results-oriented foreign policy in recent years.

Official Baku has long moved beyond being merely a regional actor and has established a state model recognized as a reliable partner in international initiatives and as a contributor to global political dialogue. The letter from the U.S. President to the President of Azerbaijan should be understood precisely as a political confirmation of this reality. The statement in the letter—“It is my great honor to invite you, as President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, to join me in a critically historic and magnificent effort to solidify peace in the Middle East and, at the same time, to embark on a bold new approach to resolving Global Conflict”—is a clear expression of Washington’s political respect and trust in Azerbaijan.

This appeal demonstrates that Azerbaijan is no longer a passive observer on the international peace agenda but is recognized as an actor that influences processes and participates in shaping decisions. The fact that the U.S. President’s letter specifically emphasizes Azerbaijan’s invitation as a Founding Member State of the Board of Peace and its participation in forming its Charter is an institutional confirmation of this trust.

The statement made by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in his reply to U.S. President Donald Trump—“I accept this invitation as a sign of mutually respectful and beneficial partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States of America, and as a recognition of Azerbaijan's role in promotion of peace and stability at the regional and global levels”—clearly reflects the essence of this political line.

This position demonstrates that consistency and principle are central to Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. The President’s reply letter once again confirms that official Baku acts as an open, responsible, and balanced partner in international relations. At the same time, this approach presents Azerbaijan’s participation in peace initiatives not as a tactical step but as part of a long-term strategic course, clearly signaling the country’s intention to contribute to global stability.

Zaur Məmmədov: Prezident İlham Əliyev müsahibəsində regiondakı proseslərə müdaxilə etmək istəyənlərə çox vacib mesajlar verdi

Ph.D. in Political Science and political analyst Zaur Mammadov told APA that the countries invited to the Peace Council are those trusted by the United States, with stable relations with it, and that take a constructive stance in international processes.

According to him, Azerbaijan’s invitation to the Peace Council is entirely logical and a true reflection of the country’s established political weight on the international stage: “Although geographically small, Azerbaijan has in recent years acted as a reliable global actor with real influence in the international relations system. Under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the consistent and balanced foreign policy line has allowed the country to gain substantial experience in resolving regional conflicts, effectively managing the post-conflict period, and promoting a sustainable peace model. These factors have significantly strengthened Azerbaijan’s international prestige and made it a reliable partner for global peace initiatives.”

The political scientist noted that Azerbaijan’s increasing activity over the past five years on various prestigious international platforms, its direct dialogue with global leaders, and its participation in initiatives are a tangible manifestation of this trust.

According to him, particularly within the framework of the Davos Economic Forum, the positive remarks voiced by a number of heads of state and government about President Ilham Aliyev confirm that he is now perceived not only as a regional but also as a global leader: President Ilham Aliyev’s invitation to the Board of Peace is not only an indicator of Azerbaijan’s growing international influence but also a reflection of Donald Trump’s political trust in and personal regard for the Azerbaijani leader. This invitation clearly demonstrates that the United States acknowledges Azerbaijan’s peace-oriented policy, its stabilizing role, and its potential to contribute to international processes.”

Azerbaijan’s leadership in the peacebuilding process in the South Caucasus is already a reality. In the post–Patriotic War period, Azerbaijan’s political course, based not on revanchism but on sustainable peace, reintegration, and regional cooperation, is generating interest as a practical model in discussions concerning the future of complex and multi-layered conflict zones such as the Middle East.

According to Zaur Mammadov, it is well known in the region that Azerbaijan is perceived as a balanced and reliable actor with significant and practical experience in peacebuilding, ensuring stability, and effectively managing post-conflict processes: “The results achieved after a conflict that lasted for many years have shown that Azerbaijan possesses the capacity to manage the post-conflict period not only militarily and politically, but also diplomatically and institutionally. The laying of the foundations for a new political chapter between Azerbaijan and Armenia constitutes one of the key pillars of this reality in terms of shaping regional stability.”

The political scientist emphasized that the steps taken to promote the peace agenda, open communication lines, and build mutual trust clearly demonstrate Azerbaijan’s constructive and responsible approach.

“For this very reason, the possibility that Azerbaijan’s post-conflict experience could be applied in the Middle East, particularly in the complex processes unfolding around Gaza, is being voiced increasingly often in international discussions,” the political scientist concluded.

As a result, the United States’ invitation to Azerbaijan to the Board of Peace is an expression of the high level of international appreciation for the consistent and peace-oriented political course shaped by official Baku in the post-conflict period. Azerbaijan has already moved beyond the regional framework and is perceived as a reliable and balanced actor that makes a real contribution to the global peace agenda. The foreign policy implemented under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev is based on the principles of dialogue, stability, and cooperation. This approach strengthens Azerbaijan’s position not only in the South Caucasus but also as a model partner for peace initiatives across a broader geography.
