The thoughts expressed by President Ilham Aliyev at the prestigious International Cernobbio Forum held in Italy on September 6th continue to be a hot topic in the global media. In particular, the Azerbaijani leader's statement regarding official Baku's potential role as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is being widely discussed in the foreign press.
It should be recalled that after the speech at the International Cernobbio Forum dedicated to the topic "Information about the world, Europe and Italy" called "Azerbaijan's role in the new geopolitical conditions", the moderator asked "How do you see your country in the discussions in the context of ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict?" In his answer to the question "Can you have any role or suggestions", Ilham Aliyev emphasized that this is theoretically possible.
"For a hypothetical possibility, it is possible. First of all, taking into account that, together with Russia and Ukraine, we were part of the Soviet Union for 70 years, we have diversified connections on a people-to-people level and on a political level. Today, we consider our relations with Russia and Ukraine to be very good. We strongly support Ukraine’s and all countries’ territorial integrity and sovereignty”, - said the head of state.
Although a long time has passed since the forum, these views of the Azerbaijani leader continue to be one of the topics that attract the attention of the world media. The global interest in these views of Mr. Aliyev cannot be considered accidental. One of the main reasons for this is that as a result of an independent and successful foreign policy, Azerbaijan has gained a high reputation among both Western and Eastern countries today.
Everyone knows very well that Azerbaijan always shows a sincere and fair position in its steps and proposals. At the same time, Baku is faithful to its commitments, promises and signatures. It is known to everyone that Azerbaijan has never been a representative of the interests of any big state or certain circles. That is why Baku is considered as a neutral ground, there is no doubt that Azerbaijan can be a fair arbiter for the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war and will spare no effort.
This is also because, as President Ilham Aliyev mentioned at the forum, there are very good and historical relations between Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine at the level of peoples and leaders. It is well known to Ukraine and Russia that Azerbaijan always takes a fair position and defends international law and justice. Therefore, Baku's mediation in this matter can be useful for all parties. The world media, based on this factor, focuses on the possibility of Baku's mediation.
It should also be emphasized that Baku has played the role of a neutral ground in certain negotiations and meetings in recent history.
On February 16, 2017, the Chief of General Staff of the United States of America (USA), General Joseph Dunford, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Army General Valery Gerasimov, met in Baku.
In addition, on April 19, 2018, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, and the Commander-in-Chief of NATO's Joint Military Forces in Europe, Curtis Scaparotti, also held a meeting in Baku.
The list of these meetings and negotiations can be extended.
It seems that the Poles, who are in tense military-political relations, choose Baku as their contact line and address. This, of course, comes from the reputation of Azerbaijan, its leader, trust and confidence in official Baku.
In addition to all this, it can be noted how honest and reliable Azerbaijan and its leader are with the countries and leaders with which it cooperates and establishes relations. Azerbaijan has repeatedly proven that it is faithful to its obligations in cooperation with countries and organizations in political, economic, and other fields. Today, Azerbaijan and its leader are considered as masters of their words and signatures all over the world.
Therefore, paying attention to President Ilham Aliyev's words that Azerbaijan can fulfill the mediation mission to stop the Russia-Ukraine war should be taken for granted.
