An Independent DNA Comparison Mechanism for Missing Persons between Armenia and Azerbaijan is proposed, this is reflected in the Assessment Report of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), APA reports.
It was noted that both Armenia and Azerbaijan currently have missing persons from the First and Second Garabakh wars, and unknown remains extracted from the war-affected areas may belong to both sides. Therefore, the creation of an independent mechanism for DNA comparison could be one of the few effective ways to confirm identifications and submit the results to the families.
Through this mechanism, for example, the ICMP could provide a scientific and impartial process, where DNA profiles would be compared in an anonymous and systematic manner. This approach would protect the DNA identification process from any political or national influence claims. If a match is found, the results of the comparison would be submitted to both countries, and forensic experts and relevant authorities would be able to make informed decisions based on scientific evidence.
This mechanism, would also promote cooperation and peace in the region besides providing families from all nations with the opportunity to find answers. It would be an opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to collectively addressing the issue of missing persons as a problem that transcends national borders."
