"We would be pleased if ICMP which has international influence on the issue of missing persons, raises the issue of providing information on the burial sites of missing persons to the Azerbaijani side in front of Armenia and acts as a mediator in this matter", said the Deputy Head of the State Security Service, General-Lieutenant Sharafat Hasanov, at the presentation of the "Assessment Report on the Search for Missing Persons in the Republic of Azerbaijan" by the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), organized by the State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, APA reports.
He noted that, in accordance with the Framework Agreement on the collection and centralized management of "Ante Mortem" data on persons missing during the First Karabakh War, signed between the State Commission and the International Committee of the Red Cross Representation in Azerbaijan in 2008, the collection of biological samples from the close relatives of missing Azerbaijani citizens has began since 2014: "Since 2023, the collection of biological samples has been carried out by the Genetic Research Center established in 2022 within the Military Medical Department of the State Security Service, following the instruction of President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the information as of March 1, biological samples have been collected and systematized from over 11,000 donors regarding more than 3,700 missing persons. The DNA profiles of the collected biological samples are extracted and archived by the Genetic Research Center of the Military Medical Department of the State Security Service."
He noted that the nearly 30-year-long occupation of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized sovereign territories has prevented the clarification of the fate of Azerbaijan's missing citizens.
