Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloghlu – APA. In West free journalism is in name only, said Stjepan Mesic, former Croation president.
He made the remarks addressing a panel discussion held within the framework of the 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum in Baku Sept. 29.
According to him, despite the era of international communications, some people are turning to chauvinism and nationalism.
He stressed the role of journalism in promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
“When I was a president, I saw how so-called journalists damaged interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Now, I want to talk about real journalism. Some advertisers, even politicians are trying to be accepted by the society on social networks. The goal of real journalism is to bring people together,” said the former president.
“In West free journalism is in name only,” said Mesic. “For example, BBC channel reports on the tragic situation in Aleppo, while a Russian TV channel shows humanitarian aid delivered to Aleppo. A real journalist must highlight both cases.”
The 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum kicked off at the Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku on Sep.29.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the official opening ceremony of the forum.
The Baku International Humanitarian Forum was initiated in 2010 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and former Russian President, current Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
