Starting August 15, Baku Metro CJSC, part of AZCON Holding, will begin the main construction phase of the Red and Green Line Separation Project, Baku Metro told APA-Economics.
The construction is expected to last approximately 10–11 months, during which train service between Nizami and 28 May stations will be suspended.
The project is being implemented in accordance with the 2025–2030 State Program on Improving Transport Infrastructure in Baku City and Surrounding Areas, approved by an order of President Ilham Aliyev.
The project's main objective, which is considered strategically essential for the future development of the Baku Metro, is to eliminate the dependency between the Red and Green lines, reduce congestion at stations, minimize train intervals, and improve the reliability of operations.
Currently, thousands of passengers traveling in different directions share the same platform at 28 May Station, leading to excessive congestion during peak hours and creating significant difficulties for boarding and disembarking. Once the project is completed, passengers traveling toward Icherisheher will use the platform at 28 May Station, while those heading toward Darnagul will use the platform at Jafar Jabbarli Station. In addition, the second passenger staircase connecting 28 May and Jafar Jabbarli stations, which is nearing completion, will provide a faster and more convenient transfer between the two stations.
Temporary changes during construction
As part of the project, the second phase of construction of the Darnagul electric depot, which will serve the Green Line, is nearing completion. Construction of two new 200-meter tunnels connecting Jafar Jabbarli and Nizami stations will begin on August 15 and continue for approximately 10–11 months.
During this period, metro operations will be organized as follows:
28 May–Nizami section: Passenger service between these two stations will be suspended. Based on joint assessments, the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA) will introduce additional express bus routes and increase the number of buses on existing routes.
Red Line: Trains will operate between Icherisheher and Ahmadli every 2 minutes 30 seconds under an enhanced operating schedule. (The current shuttle interval between Ahmadli and Hazi Aslanov will remain in place until repair works are completed.)
Green Line: Trains will operate between Darnagul and Nizami at 3-minute 30-second intervals.
Jafar Jabbarli–Khatai section: Shuttle service will remain unchanged with 7-minute intervals.
Purple Line: Trains will continue operating between Khojasan and 8 November stations at 8-minute intervals.
Following completion of the construction, the Red Line (Icherisheher–Hazi Aslanov) and Green Line (Darnagul–Khatai) will operate as fully independent lines.
Green Line trains will run from Darnagul through Jafar Jabbarli to Khatai, with service every 3 minutes 30 seconds. As a result, the current 8-minute waiting time on the Jafar Jabbarli–Khatai section will be eliminated. At a later stage, once tunnels and turning infrastructure extending to Y-15 Station are completed, Green Line intervals are expected to be reduced to 2 minutes.
Construction of the Icherisheher turning chamber on the Red Line is also continuing and is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2028. Once all infrastructure projects are finalized, train intervals on both the Red and Green lines will be reduced to 2 minutes.
Baku Metro has asked passengers to show understanding and patience regarding the temporary inconvenience that may arise during the construction period.

The main construction phase of the Red and Green Line separation project—one of the most important initiatives that will shape the future development of the Baku Metro—will begin on August 15.
You can find detailed information in the video presentation about the purpose of the project, the work to be carried out, the regulation of public transport during the construction period, and the advantages that the separation of the lines will bring to passengers.
The line separation project is not a choice for the future development of the Baku Metro, but a strategic necessity.
