“Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC (ADY), an AZCON Holding company, continues efforts to develop international railway transportation, accelerate border crossing, expand transit capacity, and strengthen digital integration, ADY told APA.
A meeting at Boyuk-Kesik station, attended by representatives of the railway administrations of Azerbaijan and Georgia and relevant state agencies, focused on improving cross-border freight and passenger transportation. The parties discussed reducing freight train border-crossing time, strengthening regional transport links, and enhancing the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor.
A key topic was expanding digital solutions, including real-time electronic data exchange between ADY and Georgian Railways and greater integration between the information systems of relevant state agencies, including customs authorities.
Preparations for an additional Baku-Tbilisi passenger train were also reviewed. The parties stressed the importance of simplifying border and customs procedures to improve passenger comfort.
A separate working meeting resulted in a decision to allow ADY electric locomotives to operate continuously on the Boyuk Kesik–Tbilisi–Boyuk Kesik route without detaching train compositions.
The parties also agreed to eliminate duplicate wagon inspections. Instead of inspections at both Boyuk Kesik and Gardabani, checks will now be carried out only at Boyuk Kesik for Azerbaijan–Georgia traffic and at Tbilisi junction station for Georgia–Azerbaijan traffic. This optimization will cut freight train border-crossing time by half. Flexible freight operations under the new system have already been successfully tested.
The new approach will strengthen railway cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia, improve the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor, shorten transit times, support more efficient logistics, and enable more flexible passenger and freight operations.
ADY continues working with international partners to modernize railway infrastructure, optimize transportation processes, and expand digital solutions, reinforcing Azerbaijan’s role as a regional transport and logistics hub.
In recent years, ADY has completed major infrastructure upgrades at Boyuk Kesik, significantly increasing border crossing capacity, modernizing railway infrastructure, expanding train handling capabilities, and introducing digital management systems to improve the reliability of international transit transportation.
