Rustam Usubov: â€œMost of the Armenians in Sumgayit knew beforehand about the mass unrestsâ€

Baku. Konul Jafarova - APA. “The investigation has revealed that most of the Armenians, who lived in Sumgayit 26 years ago, knew beforehand about the mass unrests. The investigation has found out that more than 100 families living in Sumgayit withdrew their deposits before the unrests and left the city, most of them were rich families. A lot of international calls were made by Armenians during that period,” First Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov said at the presentation ceremony of the book “Sumgayit, 1988. Crime and punishment” dedicated to the mass unrests in Sumgayit in February, 1988, APA reports.

Rustam Usubov said the investigation found out that Armenian special service officers came to Baku and Sumgayit, stayed at the hotels, met with the Armenians and had secret talks with them.

Rustam Usubov noted that Armenian women currently living in Sumgayit were interrogated, in the testimonies they said Azerbaijanis saved the lives of hundreds of Armenians during the unrests. Moreover, when the investigation group of the USSR Prosecutor General’s Office was carrying out investigation, the inspectors of Armenia SSR Prosecutor’s Office interrogated the Armenians, who left Sumgayit for Armenia, those persons also said in their testimonies that Azerbaijanis saved their lives. Referring to the “fact” that Azerbaijanis were not killed during the unrests in Sumgayit, Armenians still continue their claims. Despite Armenians’ claims, the investigation of the abovementioned cases found out that Baku Garrison's Military Prosecutor's Office has investigated the case on the four Azerbaijanis killed when the troops were deployed in the city and the case was dropped without any grounds. Our additional investigation on that case proved that the driver of Baku bus fleet #1, Armenian Markaryan Valerie Vaskanovich deliberately ran over pedestrians, which caused the death of four Azerbaijanis. Russian investigators pretended the incident so that the victims were allegedly guilty and died accidentally after remaining under the armored vehicles driven by servicemen. The relatives of dead have assumed up to now that the crime was committed by servicemen. Investigation is underway.”
