Baku. Shahriyar Alizade – APA. Azerbaijan’s traffic police have imposed up to AZN 60 million fine based on the protocols drawn up for over two million cases of traffic violations registered throughout the country since beginning of 2016, Ehsan Zahidov, Interior Ministry spokesman, told APA on Aug.29.
The spokesman also confirmed media reports suggesting that over AZN 40 million fine has been applied for the violations of traffic rules in the first half of 2016.
He noted that 65% of violations were recorded by up-to-date traffic cameras.
Zahidov continued: “Unfortunately, there are some who try to explain traffic police activities in a negative way and think they can by this means cause confusion within society,” said Zahidov. “For one thing, some so-called human rights activists claim that the amount of 40.2 million manats mentioned on social networks obtained from fines against violations of traffic rules are aimed at filling the state budget. First of all, an amount of 40 to 50 million manats is quite a small figure for the country’s current budget. Secondly, traffic movement in our country, like in all developed countries, is monitored by up-to-date traffic cameras. It’s thanks to the efficient use of these technical means as well as the relentless strife of traffic patrol officers against violations of traffic rules that the number of casualties from road accidents are decreasing day after day.”
Compared to last year’s records, the number of deaths from traffic accidents have dropped by 111 (22.3%) and of injuries by 122 (9.3%), the spokesman added.
