Parviz Hashimli told journalists outside the court that he is tortured. Later, Hashimli’s lawyer Elchin Sadigov said he attempted to hurt himself with scissors at the detention facility of the Ministry of National Security, but his attempt was prevented.
Chief of Public Affairs of the Ministry of National Security Arif Babayev told APA that these reports are groundless.
“These are groundless, false reports. No fact of torture or inhuman treatment has been recorded at the detention facility of the Ministry of National Security up to now. It is impossible. As you know, representatives of the Human Rights Commissioner’s Office, NGOs fighting against tortures regularly monitor detention facility of the Ministry of National Security. They have not recorded any illegal action, or fact of torture against detainees. To some extent these reports aim at exerting pressure on investigation,” he said.
Parviz Hashimli was detained by the officers of the Ministry of National Security on September 17. He faced charges under articles 206.3.2 (smuggling) and 228.2.1 (illegally obtaining, keeping firearms) of the Criminal Code.
Sabail district court sentenced him to pre-trial detention.
Lawyer Sadigov is not available for comment. As the lawyer does not receive phone calls and today’s process has been closed, it is not known what decision has been passed on Hashimli’s appeal.
