Israel planned to carry out an assassination attempt against the Iranian negotiating delegation during talks between Washington and Tehran, The New York Times reports.
The article notes that, according to former and current US officials, during the negotiations that intensified in April, Israel sought to kill the negotiating delegation led by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
US officials, however, dissuaded Israel from the plan, fearing that if those individuals were killed, there would be no one left in Iran with whom to conduct dialogue.
The Iranian side, in turn, demanded guarantees from the United States that the negotiating delegation would not be killed.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington did not comment on the report.
