German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which he congratulated him on the 250th anniversary of US independence. This was announced to reporters by German cabinet spokesman Stefan Cornelius, APA reports.
"He [the Chancellor] emphasized the special bond between Germans and Americans. The Chancellor and the US President took the opportunity to coordinate their positions ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara," Cornelius said.
"The Chancellor emphasized that Germany will assume greater responsibility for security in the Euro-Atlantic region. NATO, he said, will become more European so that it can remain transatlantic," the cabinet spokesman noted, adding that both leaders agreed to continue the discussion in Ankara.
