Baku. Shahriyar Alizade – APA. Rahib Mahsinov, one of the perpetrators of a bomb attack carried out at the “20 January” metro station in Baku on 19 March 1994 will appeal to the Supreme Court.
Mahsinov’s lawyer will submit an appeal on cancellation of the verdict against his defendant to the Plenum of the Supreme Court in coming days.
The suicide bombing occurred at the “20 January” metro station in Baku on 19 March 1994. The time bomb planted under a seat in the head railroad car detonated when it stopped at the station, killing the immediate perpetrator Ogtay Gurbanov. As a result of the attack, 14 people were killed and 49 wounded. Among the victims was Azerbaijani people’s artist Rafig Babayev. The explosion partially collapsed ceiling of the metro station.
Members of Sadval, a Lezghin separatist movement, that assumed responsibility for blast, were arrested. Planners and perpetrators of the terrorist attack were in contact with Armenian intelligence and trained in this country. 11 perpetrators were charged over the terrorist act. Rahib Mahsinov was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently serving his sentence in Gobustan Prison.
