APA reports quoting the ECHR press service that one of the judgments is connected with the complaint of editor-in-chief of the Azadlig newspaper Ganimat Zahid.
According to the court judgment, EUR 5000 is to be paid to Ganimat Zahid for nonpecuniary damage, EUR 5000 for legal fees within 3 months.
Editor-in-chief of the Azadlig newspaper Ganimat Zahid was arrested in November, 2007, under articles 127 (deliberate infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code. The detention term of the journalist, who was held at Bayil jail #1, was extended several times from November 11, 2007 to March 7, 2008. In March, 2008, Yasamal district court sentenced the journalist to 4 years in jail. He was released after Azerbaijan’s President signed amnesty order in March, 2010.
ECHR also passed a judgment on the complaint of Azerbaijani citizen Novruz Ismayilov, who is held at a jail in Baku. According to the judgment, EUR 4000 is to be paid to Ismayilov for pecuniary damage, EUR 2500 for legal fees.
Founder of Borchali private bank Ismayilov is serving 9-year imprisonment over charges of fraud, embezzlement and tax evasion.
