Chingiz Ganizadeh: â€œLeyla Yunusâ€™ list can not be taken seriously in our country or in Europeâ€

Ganizadeh told APA that Leyla Yunus’ list can not be taken seriously in our country or in Europe: “Because Leyla Yunus always makes such lists under the order of various states and international organizations. The list compiled by a person, who doesn’t love his or her country, can not be accepted in the country. The European institutions always tell us that human rights activists should be independent and should ot to be under influence of any political organization. In this case, their lists are more objective. But, Leyla Yunus is currently representing the National Council and trying to hold its meetings. Leyla Yunis is cooperating with radical organizations. Of course, her list will be a one-sided and anti-government document. This list is biased and can not be objective and fair. It is a step aiming at undermining Azerbaijan’s statehood.

Ganizadeh added that the Council of Europe has not determined the criterion of political prisoner yet: “When these criteria are determined, we are ready to hold discussions in this regard.”

Human rights defender Saadat Bananyarli told APA that the list of political prisoners of their monitoring group contains the names of 42 people: “We are regularly appealed in this regard. Of course, we make this list basing on the criteria of the Council of Europe. First, we collect documents on applicants. If these documents conform to the specific criteria, this person is included in the category of political prisoner.”

Saadat Bananyarli also noted that a lot people appealed to them: “Of course, many people appeal to us, but their documents are not always correct. Our list is completely objective. I don’t consider other lists objective.”

The Institute for Peace and Democracy has released the statistics of political prisoners in Azerbaijan for January, 2014. The list contains 134 political prisoners, including Tofig Yagublu, Avaz Zeynalli, Parviz Hashimli, Faramaz Allahverdiyev, Abdul Abilov, Anar Mammadli, Gurban Mammadov, Yadigar Sadigov, Babak Adalatli, Elshan Ismayilli and others.
