The statement says that on October 29, 2013, Prosecutor General’s Office launched criminal case after receiving materials from the Ministry of Taxes and Ministry of Finance saying that officials of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center and International Cooperation of Volunteers Public Union generated a great profit and evaded tax payments abusing their powers. Co-founder and chairman of Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center Anar Mammadli was sentenced to pre-trial detention under articles 192.2.2, 213.1 and 308.2 of the Criminal Code.
“But some international organizations and their representatives basing on their political interests have recently claimed that the charges against Anar Mammadli are groundless and demanded his immediate release. Interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan, which has chosen democratic, legal state-building and is pursuing independent domestic and foreign policy, is inadmissible and we regard these groundless demands as pressure on Azerbaijan’s judicial and prosecuting authorities.
Anar Mammadli has faced charges not over his political activity as claimed by some international organizations, but basing on the court decision and materials and evidence submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office as a result of the inspections carried out by the special auditing office of Taxes Ministry’s Tax Audit Department, State Financial Control Service of the Finance Ministry and Council of State Support for NGOs,” the statement says.
Moreover, Anar Mammadli’s right of defense and other rights are ensured in line with the criminal procedure legislation and all investigative acts were carried out in the presence of his lawyers. Currently, four lawyers are defending his rights.
