The individual detained in Istanbul with 70 kg of gold and claiming to be an Azerbaijani diplomat is not a diplomat, according to information obtained by APA.
The detained person had previously served as an assistant to the military attaché at Azerbaijan's Embassy in the United States.
Although there were reports claiming that the detained individual was appointed as a military attaché of Azerbaijan in Saudi Arabia, this information has not been confirmed.
Recall that during an anti-smuggling operation conducted near the "Vadi Istanbul" shopping center in Istanbul, Türkiye, police discovered 70 kilograms of gold on an Azerbaijani citizen traveling in a taxi.
While the person introduced himself as a diplomat, it has been established that he is not an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
