Azerbaijan reports 39,000 drug-related cases in 2019–2024

Between 2019 and 2024, law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan identified a total of 47,863 cases related to the illegal circulation of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors, utilizing modern telecommunications and information technologies, APA reports citing the State Program for Combating Drug Addiction for 2025–2030.

Of these cases, 16,458 involved the sale of narcotic and psychotropic substances, 29,148 involved illegal acquisition and possession, 1,877 involved illegal cultivation of narcotic plants, and 380 involved other offenses. Additionally, 33.5 tons of various narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursors were seized, including 12.73 tons of heroin, 15.01 tons of marijuana, 2.2 tons of opium, 0.33 tons of hashish, 0.007 tons of cocaine, and 3.223 tons of other substances.

During this period, 39,002 individuals faced criminal liability, including 510 foreigners, 37,978 men, and 1,024 women. Based on 21,464 court rulings, authorities destroyed a total of 14.4 tons of narcotics and psychotropic substances, along with 156,291 cannabis plants.
