Baku-APA. Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, a U.S. official said Saturday on condition of anonymity, APA reports citing Xinhua.

According to the official, al-Rahman was killed in Waziristan on Aug. 22, the same day a U.S. CIA drone struck the Pakistani tribal region.

The Libyan national rose to al-Qaida’s No. 2 spot after the network’s leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces during a raid on his Pakistan compound in May.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that the death of bin Laden does not mean al-Qaida is gone, and it is important for the U.S. to keep pressure on the terrorist group to ensure national security.
