Ukrainian Interior Ministry: The investigation of the case of the doctors, who performed illegal organ transplants in Azerbaijan, is about to be completed

Baku. Viktoria Dementyeva â€“ APA. The investigation of the â€œblack transplantâ€ case of the doctors of Kiev-based Shalimov Institute is about to be completed, said chief of Ukrainian Interior Ministryâ€™s Main Investigation Department Vasili Farinnik, APA reports quoting Interfax-Ukraine.

He said 25 were recognized as sufferers over the case of â€œblack transplantâ€.
â€œThe facts of surgeries have been confirmed by documents. The doctors can not escape, because donors gave testimonies against them,â€ he said.
Six have been prosecuted over the fact, three of them are doctors. All have been arrested.

The doctors face charges over illegal transplants and also over the establishment of organized criminal group. The head of the group is the citizen of Israel, who does not have medical education.

VAsili Farinnik said the doctors performed 15 out of 25 surgeries in Azerbaijan, the rest in Ecuador and Kosovo.

Basing on the appeal of the Ukrainian law-enforcement bodies concerning illegal transplants, Azerbaijani Prosecutor Generalâ€™s Office and Interior Ministry carried out a joint investigation. It was found out that in 2009 a group of citizens of Ukraine arranged illegal kidney transplants by Ukrainian doctors for the citizens of various countries in the medical center of Azerbaijan International University. Prosecutor Generalâ€™s Office and Interior Ministry carried out operations together with Ukrainian law-enforcement bodies. It was found out that officials of the medical center under Azerbaijan International University abused their power violated the requirements of the Law of Azerbaijan Republic on â€œTransplant of human organs and (or) tissuesâ€. Without having special agreement (license) for transplants of human organs and tissues, they created conditions for ten surgeries, kidneys of the donors from Ukraine were transplanted to the foreign recipients. They got a large sum of money for each surgery without doing necessary paperwork.

Prosecutor Generalâ€™s Office of the Republic launched criminal case on responsible persons of the medical center under Azerbaijan International University under article 308.2 (abuse of power resulted in serious consequences) of the Criminal Code.
Investigative group consisting of officers of the Republican Prosecutor Office and Interior Ministry was created, investigation department on grave crimes at the General Prosecutorâ€™s Office was tasked for conducting preliminary investigation.
