Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. “Azerbaijan has always supported the draft resolution of the United States on Syria. But Azerbaijan has its own principled position on this matter,” director of the Center for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan’s President (SAM) Ferhad Mammadov told APA.

He explained the position of Azerbaijan: “First, humanitarian crisis and civil war in Syria must be stopped. I think that the UN Security Council will fail to reach a consensus on Syrian crisis, because Russia and China use their right to veto regarding the matters of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. The intention of military intervention of any country in Syria will not be welcomed by the UN Security Council and the UN will not issue a mandate in this regard. In this case, the US should either form a coalition or strike Syria alone.”

Ferhad Mammadov said it is a proven fact that Syria has chemical weapons: ‘But have these weapons been used against civilians? This must be evaluated by the independent expert group of the UN. Here we again see the crisis inside the international organization. The UN resolutions, for example, resolution on Nagorno Karabakh conflict still remain unfulfilled. On the other side, conflict of interests occurs in the UN and consequently, the UN becomes unable to carry out the function of global security. I think that the UN must be more principled in this case and the super powers should seek appropriate solutions to the crises.
