Armenia's Investigative Committee has completed the preliminary investigation into a criminal case concerning the alienation of the "Black Fortress" (Sev Berd), a historical and cultural monument of national significance located in the city of Gyumri, during Serzh Sargsyan's tenure as defense minister, Armenpress reports.

The investigation found that on May 11, 2005, Sargsyan sold the 626.45-square-meter fortress and the adjacent 0.7-hectare plot allocated for its use directly to a private individual for approximately 22.95 million drams without a relevant government decision.

Investigators believe that, as a result of this action, the state lost ownership of the historical and cultural monument of national significance. Sargsyan has been charged with abuse of official powers resulting in grave consequences through negligence. The criminal case, along with the indictment, has been referred to the prosecutor's office for consideration.
