Baku-APA. Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has commented on the statement issued by European Union Commissioners on the arrest of director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, human right activist Leyla Yunus, APA reports quoting the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The statement on Leyla Yunus by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, dated on August 2, 2014 is groundless and unacceptable.
In Azerbaijan, as in all democratic societies, no one can put themselves above the law. Any citizen accused of committing specific criminal acts must answer before the law. Investigative process is carried out in full compliance with the requirements of the legislation. Leyla Yunus is also accused of treason, alongside several other charges. Such statements are rejected and evaluated as interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan and the judicial system, as an attempt to deliberately politicize the criminal nature of the action. Political pressure on the Republic of Azerbaijan in these ways is absolutely useless, " reads the statement
