“During my time here, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan have worked together through this complex geopolitical landscape to strengthen our mutual security and prosperity,” British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld said at a farewell meeting, APA reports.
“But I saved the biggest development for last. In August 2025, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan agreed to elevate relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership. This was a statement about both the present and the future. It was a message about the further development potential of our already deep, broad and mutually trusting relationship. This Strategic Partnership is based on three main pillars: defense and security; trade and investment; innovation and education,” he said.
He noted that some of his most unforgettable moments were his visits to Garabagh and East Zangezur:
“Last year, I had a wonderful visit to Shusha and Lachin with the British Chamber of Commerce. With every visit, I have seen new developments and fresh hope. I am proud that British companies are part of this process. Chapman Taylor is providing world-class design and master planning expertise in Garabagh, Baku, and now also in Nakhchivan. bp’s ‘Shafag’ solar power plant project in Jabrayil is creating both clean energy and new jobs, and will contribute to the decarbonization of the Sangachal terminal. Of course, no development in Garabagh would have been possible without mine clearance activities. I am proud of the direct contribution made by British mine action companies and NGOs — including those supported through our government programs. Since 2022, we have led international efforts in this area, and it has been among the most important work the embassy has ever undertaken. Meeting mine detection dogs and rats in Aghdam and Jabrayil was also a personally memorable moment for me. We have also actively supported the involvement of women in national mine clearance teams.”
