Russian MFA: Ilham Aliyevâ€™s re-election of president created opportunity for closer cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia

Victoria Dementyeva â€“APA. â€œAzerbaijan and Russia developed political relations and intensified political dialogue in 2008â€, said Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its report on the results of last year, APA reports. Ilham Aliyevâ€™s re-election of president created an opportunity for closer cooperation and deepening of relations between the two countries, said the ministry in a chapter of report dedicated to the directions of foreign policy in CIS. â€œRussian President Dmitriy Medvedev made official visit to Baku in July 2008 and presidents of both countries signed a declaration on friendship and strategic partnership. Economic and commercial relations were also actively developed between Azerbaijan and Russia. The trade turnover reached two billion dollars for the first time over the past ten yearsâ€.
The current cooperation potential was not fully involved yet in the investment cooperation, and some boundary and property problems, said the ministry.
