Herman Van Rompuy: â€œThe EU is interested in strengthening of relations with Azerbaijanâ€

The EU president said that Azerbaijan is a unique state from standpoint of geographical position. He also stressed the importance of achievement of peace and stability in the region and called the countries of the region â€œNot to be hostage of the history and together build a better futureâ€.

â€œThe EU attaches a great importance to its eastern neighbors. Recently new European Neighbor Policy program has been launched and this program aimed to support the development of these countries. The EU doesnâ€™t establish cooperation only at a level of economical cooperation, but we also attach a great importance to the civil society. The civil society plays a very important role in the development of democracyâ€.

Herman Van Rompuy noted that the EU supports Azerbaijan in continuation and deepening of reforms: â€œWe appreciate the efforts of Azerbaijan to improve condition in the sphere of human right and to develop democracyâ€. Talking about the fact that Azerbaijan was selected as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council Herman Van Rompuy said that the EU highly appreciates the cooperation with Azerbaijan in several significant spheres.
