Member of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE prepares draft resolution entitled â€œConstant threat of Metsamor Atomic Electric Station to South Caucasus and Europeâ€

APAâ€™s special correspondent reports from Strasburg that the draft resolution was signed by MPs from different countries and the document was included in the session of political organization. (According to the procedure rules the document prepared by the member of PACE must be signed by 5 member countries and 20 deputies).

The draft was signed by about 25 European parliamentarians. The document says: â€œMetsamor Atomic Power Station located in Armenia is a constant threat to South Caucasus and Europe. The questions dealing with the stoppage of work of Metsamor station functioning in a seismic zone were raised for several times at the sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly. The question is that if any emergency case occurs in this area Azerbaijan will have less than 24 hours for evacuation. Besides it, Metsamor having a power to kill a great number of people in South Caucasus is located in an 11-magnitude earthquake risky zone. Armenia was asked by the European Union to stop the work of Metsamor power station in 2011. The material aid in size of 100 millions USD was proposed to Armenia in order to provide the needs of the county in electric energy. But Armenia started using the atomic electric station (it was established in 1974) in 1995 againâ€.

The draft resolution underlines that Metsamor powers station, which was situated on 16 km far from Turkey, 60 km from Iran and 120 km from Azerbaijan and Georgia borders, causes threat for not only Azerbaijan, but for the other countries of the region: â€œConsidering current and future security of Europe and Armeniaâ€™s inability to meet needs and technical conditions, the assembly recommends followings:

-Appointment of special adviser to carry out urgent and detailed investigation on the issue;
-Establishing investigative group consisting of relevant qualified parliamentarians;
-Creating urgent base to hold dialogue with the participation of famous experts from the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs and Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.
