OSCE Chairman-in-Office meets with political parties’ leaders in Azerbaijan

Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. OSCE Chairman-in-Office Eamon Gilmore met with the leaders of political parties represented in Azerbaijani parliament. Press service of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party told APA that the representatives of pro-government and opposition parties discussed the solution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict. The talks held toward the solution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict were discussed at the meeting. The political parties’ leaders made remarks about the non-solution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict so far and told Gilmore that the OSCE must acknowledge that the responsibility of the sides is not same, and it must recognize that Azerbaijan is an aggrieved country, the territories of which were occupied, but Armenia is an invader country that violates the international law norms and occupied territories of another country. E. Gilmore also was told that unless his organization doesn’t confess this reality Azerbaijani society won’t confide the OSCE.

The problems dealing with reforms and democratization were also discussed at the meeting. The representatives of opposition parties shared views on such issues as free assembling and the freedom of speech, political prisoners’ problem, prevention of election falsification, pressure on opposition parties. They also mentioned about the groundless detention of photo correspondent Mehman Huseynov.

It was mentioned that Azerbaijani society demonstrated its readiness for democratization by establishing democratic governments in the beginning of 1920s and the end of 1990s.

E. Gilmore said that Azerbaijan undertook commitment before the OSCE. A lot of work must be done in order to provide freedom of speech and assembly, to solve political prisoner problem and to hold democratic elections.
