Issue on Azerbaijan discussed in Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly

Strasbourg. Fuad Gulubayli â€“ APA. Today, an assembly of Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights was held within the winter session of Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. According to APAâ€™s European bureau, the issue on political prisoners in Azerbaijan was discussed at the meeting.

Along with Committeeâ€™s members, members of Azerbaijani delegation, human rights defenders of Azerbaijan and foreign countries and special envoy for political prisoners Christof Shtrasser attended the discussions.

According to Samad Seyidov, head of delegation of Azerbaijan in PACE, main point of discussions was impossibility of remaining against Azerbaijan at non-objective position: â€œIt was clarified that, non-objective position can influence on Azerbaijan-European Council negatively. Therefore, itâ€™s not right to exert pressure on Azerbaijan under the political prisoner, distinguishing Azerbaijan from other countries and realize measures on it. This idea was supported by most members of committee. I consider that, this issue will be discussed at the next meeting of Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, more strictly. Today, Azerbaijani Presidentâ€™s policy is directed to human rights and their defense. I think, PACE deputies know about issues conducted on human rights. Therefore, todayâ€™s discussions were held normallyâ€.
