PACE holds hearing on report by Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg

APAâ€™s European bureau reports that it was the last report by Hammarberg as he ends tenure in the post of the Commissioner for Human Rights on March 31, 2012. The Commissioner focused attention on the state of human rights in Europe.

Hammarberg touched upon the problems of incorrect work of court systems and corruption, as well as slow national judicial procedures in some countries, the state of freedom of press and speech, gender, the rights of women and children, migration and etc. Commissioner said the state of human rights has worsened in the period of economic crisis in Europe, mostly damaging the old and disabled people.

The state of human rights in Azerbaijan was also described in the report, which focused attention on the freedoms of speech and assembly in the country and importance of the fulfillment of the commitments by the government.
