Azerbaijani President: â€œThe election of Azerbaijan as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is the most important, significant and monumental victory in the history of our independent countryâ€

Baku â€“ APA. â€œThe election of Azerbaijan as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is the most important, significant and monumental victory in the history of our independent country. This victory reflects all of our achievements both inside the country and in the international arenaâ€, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said in his interview to Rossiya TVâ€™s program â€œFormula of Powerâ€.

President said in the year of 20th anniversary of its independence, Azerbaijan won the support of 155 countries in a keen struggle. â€œI believe that besides the influence and image, the membership in the UN Security Council will be useful in practice. It will also defend our interests in the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, which is the most important and difficult issue for us. We will keep this issue on agenda of the UN Security Council. We will also contribute to the strengthening of peace, security and cooperationâ€.

The Head of State mentioned the process of the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict too. â€œThe way of the settlement of the conflict passes through the norms of international law and fulfillment of the resolutions of UN Security Council. These resolutions must be fulfilled. There are four such resolutions and all of them demand: the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan must be restored. This is our sovereign right. We have sovereign rights to restore the territorial integrity of our country not only by political, but military ways too. This is in accordance with the UN Charter. But we donâ€™t want to use itâ€.
