The analyst underlined several factors for the possible instability.

“There are several frozen conflicts - Nagorno-Karabakh; Abkhazia/South Ossetia and Transnistria that remain unresolved. Since all of them have a vital strategic importance for major powers in the region, they may become a matter of violent confrontation once a multilateral diplomacy runs its course”, he said.

Mr. Kudelia believes that, all Russia, Europe and the US are interested in maintaining stability in the region. However, they have different expectations about the sources of this stability.

“The West is interested in preventing Russia’s renewed attempts to re-integrate post-Soviet states into a so-called Eurasian Union”, he says adding, hence, the West will try to promote the development of civil society in the region, while also supporting the sovereign rights of post-Soviet countries and backing projects that would enhance their economic independence.

“For Russia, stability is primarily in closer integration of post-Soviet space and increasing dependence of these countries on Moscow. Hence, the ideal of post-Soviet space for Russia consists of clientilistic states, which tightly coordinate their economic and security policies with the Kremlin”, he added.
