OSCE Chairman urges member countries to adopt defamation law

Ažubalis said that one of the main priorities of Lithuania during its presidency in the OSCE was the creating of safe conditions for the activity of the journalists: “More than 30 journalists were killed in the past several years due to their professional activity. The attacks on journalists still continue. I urge the OSCE member countries to improve the legislation for safety of the journalists and adopt defamation law.

Dunja Mijatović, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media said it was needed to struggle for freedom of expression in the 21st century. “The issue of journalists’ safety has catapulted to the forefront of international attention and for good reason. With this guidebook, the OSCE is raising awareness of the issue throughout our vast region. It sets out, in practical terms, what the authorities and civil society, those responsible for the safety of journalists, can and must do to create a climate conducive to fearless reporting and reporting free from fear.”
