The situation of democratic institutions in Armenia discussed at PACE

In their opinion, Armenia was able to resolve the issue according to guidelines and standards of the CE. But, according to the speakers, the March events and their consequences have become over the years an obstacle to democratic development.

They said that corruption remains a major problem in Armenia. German reporter on Armenia Axel Fischer noted that the Nagorno Karabakh issue is not their mandate so a little space paid for it at the report and the speakers have focused on democratic reform in the country.

In discussions on the report took part 15 MPs. Four of them were representatives of the Armenian delegation, and six of them were from Azerbaijani deligation. Representatives of the Azerbaijani delegation noted the aggressive policy of Armenia, and brought to the attention of the Assembly of the fact that Armenia ignores the international decisions and resolutions. Member of Azerbaijani delegation Aydin Abbasov said that Armenia does not fulfill three basic principles of CE. Abbasov mentioned well-known events of March and stressed that Armenia risks recurrence of such events remains and there is no stability. He said that Armenia has violated human rights and the economy is in poor condition, and for this reason that people in large numbers leaving Armenia.

Members of the Azerbaijani delegation noted the importance of establishing democracy in Armenia and its transformation into a civilized state. They reiterated the fact that Armenia ignores the decisions and resolutions adopted by the UN and the PACE and the Council of Europe urged to bring the matter close attention.
