Dmitry Medvedev: â€œRussia and Azerbaijan have a great chance to sign natural gas agreementâ€

He said Gazprom was continuing the talks with Azerbaijan. â€œWe have a great chance to reach agreement within the interests of our states and commercial companies. It can open a new page of energy cooperation. If such agreement is prepared â€“ I reiterate there is a great chance â€“ we can sign it and it will be an important event in the relations between our countriesâ€.

During his visit to Azerbaijan in June 2008, chairman of Russian Gazpromâ€™s Board of Governors Alexey Miller said they were ready to buy Azerbaijani natural gas on the basis of long-term agreement. In March 2009, the parts decided to begin the talks on sale terms of Azerbaijani natural gas from January 2010. In near future, Gazprom and State Oil Company of Azerbaijan will conduct technical inspection of 200-km Baku-Novo Filya gas pipeline from Baku to Russian borders through the Caspian coasts and will modernize it later.

Azerbaijan has 1.5 trillion cubic meters of discovered natural gas resources.
