US President Donald Trump is confident that NATO countries, which have so far refused to agree to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, will do so soon. He stated at a press conference in Ankara following the North Atlantic Alliance summit, APA reports.
"Most countries have agreed to this. There are a couple [of states] that haven't, but I have a feeling they will. And quite soon," the American leader said.
"Today was very positive. One [country] in particular. I didn't think they were a good team member. They were today," Trump added, reflecting on the summit. He did not specify which countries he was referring to. Trump has harshly criticized Spain in recent weeks, including for its refusal to increase military spending.
Speaking about last year's NATO summit in the Netherlands, Trump noted: "We reached unprecedented agreements to increase annual defense spending, raising our share of GDP from 2% to 5%. Everyone said it was impossible. And now they're expressing their gratitude to me."
