The World Bank has appointed a new Country Manager for Azerbaijan, the bank said, APA-Economics reports.
According to the information, Stefanie Stallmeister stepped down as the World Bank's Country Manager for Azerbaijan on July 1 this year following the completion of her term. She had been appointed to the position on July 1, 2023.
According to the information, Sacha Backes has been appointed as the World Bank's new Country Manager for Azerbaijan. He will assume the position in August this year.
Prior to this appointment, Backes served as Principal Investment Officer in the Europe Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services team at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group.
Backes has worked at the IFC for more than 17 years. During the first 12 years of that period, he worked in the Natural Resources and Infrastructure team across the IFC's offices in London, Washington and Johannesburg, leading projects primarily in the African region.
Before joining the IFC, he worked for seven years at Lux-Development, the Luxembourg government's development cooperation agency. During that time, he managed integrated rural development projects focused on agribusiness and rural infrastructure in Laos.
Sacha Backes holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from INSEAD Business School.
