Germany’s Schaeuble to receive European award

Baku - APA-Economics. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is set to be honored Thursday for his efforts to steer Europe through its debt crisis and promote the 27-nation bloc’s further integration, Business Week reported.

At a ceremony in the in the German city of Aachen, Schaeuble is due to be awarded the International Charlemagne Prize, given for services to promote European unification. Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who also chairs the group of the eurozone’s 17 finance ministers, is set to deliver an opening address.

The International Monetary Fund’s chief Christine Lagarde has praised Schaeuble for standing up to "the toughest test to European integration in postwar history."

Former winners of the award include Jean-Claude Trichet (2011), U.S. President Bill Clinton (2000) and British Prime Minister Tony Blair (1999).
