The World Bank has urged developing countries to build small artificial intelligence models that could accelerate economic growth, APA reports, citing The Guardian.

The bank’s Chief Knowledge Officer Paschal Donohoe said AI systems that run on mobile phones and do not require strong internet connections could help drive development.

He stressed that these technologies should be adapted to local languages and communities’ needs, citing farmers in India who use AI to obtain information about soil conditions.

Donohoe said economic progress that previously took centuries could become possible within decades through these technologies.

Meanwhile, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned about AI’s impact on the labour market.

She said approximately 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected, with AI eliminating some roles and changing how work is performed in others.

Georgieva highlighted the risks facing young people entering the workforce.

She also stressed the importance of electricity, internet infrastructure and security measures for the widespread adoption of AI.
